I was first introduced to the concept of an orphanage when I was reading in the local Spectrum paper. There was an article about a young college aged girl named Mandy Brooks and a native young man from Guatemala named Guillermo. They had pulled all of their money together and started a small orphanage in Guatemala. When I read the article I was strongly impressed to call Mandy and find out how I could help. Within a few weeks my son and I were flying to Guatemala. After being at the orphanage for the first time I knew that it was my destiny to be fully involved and committed. To this day the commitment still burns deep within me.

When I first heard about the Guatemala Children’s Project I felt an immediate connection and couldn’t wait to get involved. My wife and I adopted one of our children out of an orphanage and that experience has been a driving force for me. I feel I have been given the opportunity to broaden my understanding of the enormous need for assistance on an international level. I’m most amazed by the people with whom I am able to work in this organization, they are incredible and selfless, every one of them. I’m dedicated to improving the lives of these orphans because in the end it’s really about the children.

After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in South America in 2003, I grew to love the Latin culture and people. I originally got involved with the orphanage because I work at my father, Kevin Callahan’s, cabinet business. He needed my help with some of the paper work and the foreign language and after spending a few months getting to know some of the people in Guatemala I knew I would be part of this project for many years to come.

I was introduced to the Guatemala Children's Project in 2008, and I knew immediately that I had to be a part of this. There was no question in my mind that I would be fully committed to both children and the organization. My husband Chris is fully supportive of my involvement, and he enjoys seeing the love and work that we put into every decision. I just returned from a volunteer trip in August, and I will be returning with another group of volunteers in January.
I am so grateful to be working with such wonderful individuals. We are simply ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things.

Most of my life I have felt I needed to be involved with a group that helps children in 3rd world countries but wasn't sure were to get started nor did I trust that my donations would make it to the children. I was introduced to Guatemala Children's Project and haven't looked back since. This organization has proven to be trustworthy and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. It is great to know that all of our hard work helps so many children in Guatemala.
